Tea Garden & Spice Tour
Munnar is the tea town of Kerala and is home to many important tea estates like Harrison Malayalam, AVT tea, Michael's tea and Brooke Bond. There are about 30 tea plantations in and around Munnar. Among these, majority of the plantations are owned by the Tata group's Kannan Devan Tea Estate.
The tea plants have an economic life of 40 years with careful pruning and plucking. Tea bushes are grown on specially prepared terraces to help irrigation and to prevent soil erosion. Trees are often planted in between to protect them against too much of heat and light. In Munnar, tea plants are plucked by hand every 5 to 10 days. The average yield of tea per acre in India is from 180 to 450kg.
A stroll through the tea plantations of Munnar is a must for every visitor. Once here, one will get to see all right from picking of tea leaves in the gardens and estates to their packaging in the factories. One can even pick up freshly packed tea leaves as souvenirs from the factories of Munnar.
