Kovalam means :
A grove of coconut trees' and true to its name, Kovalam village has an endless expanse of coconut trees. The beach is crescent shaped and is divided into three parts. The southern most beach of Kovalam is the Lighthouse beach and is the most popular. It offers a beautiful view of the Vizhinjam mosque. The northern beach is the Samudra and the middle beach is the Hawah beach which is humming with activity with fishermen going out to sea every morning.
Kovalam Beach in Kerala is one of the most prominent beaches of south India which is 16kms away from Trivandrum. It is one of the sought after spots for foreign tourists not only because of its great location but also for the Yoga centers and Ayurvedic massages. No wonder that today it is known as the "Paradise of the South" and people from all over the world come and holiday in Kovalam.
The ideal way to enjoy Kovalam Beach is to sit back, relax and enjoy the endless blue sea and soothing palm trees. It is also one of the safest places for swimming . There are facilities for snorkelling also and the underwater views are out of this world! If you have had enough of swimming and sun bathing, you can explore the many shops filled with local handicrafts, jewellery and clothes. All along the beach, there are wonderful sea food restaurants which offer grilled sea food like lobster, king prawns and Kalamari got fresh from the sea.
Kovalam Beach can be reached by regular bus services from Trivandrum which is the nearest airport. The nearest railhead is Trivandrum station which is connected with many cities. As for accommodation in Kovalam, there are a whole lot of hotels and guest houses to suit every budget.
